Here is a set of deer stand plans that someone e-mailed me. As always – use these plans at your own risk. I’m not liable for anything… etc.

Overview:

The plans were designed to maximize wood lengths- as they come from the lumber yard. There is almost no waste. Our plan was to assemble the stand (minus the deck) at the cabin (where we have power and tools) then disassemble it into two separate sides (Let’s call one assembled side of the deer stand a stantion). We could then get those stantions out into the woods with the remaining wood pieces cut, holes drilled, and ready to go, and bolt the stantions back together.

Assembly:

We built the whole stand laying down on its side.

First we built two opposite sides of the stand- the sides with the deck cross beams- headers. We built the two stantions, side by side, laying flat on the ground. As shown on plan, we positioned the 2”x6”x8’-0” bottom cross beam 1’-4” up the piers. Then we positioned the 2”x4”x4’-11” top rail at the top of the piers.

Before drilling holes for the bolts through the piers, top rail, and bottom cross members, we temporarily fastened each stantion using one nail at each of the 4 locations were these pieces meet. This allowed us to ‘rack’ the structure. Using a tape measure, we measured diagonally from one side at the bottom cross member up to the opposite side top rail, and then repeated this across the opposite side. We then racked the structure until these measurements were the same. What this does is ‘square up’ the stantion, which makes the structure symmetrical. Once the stantions were symmetrical we located the 2”x8” deck cross-member-header 12’-5 3/4” (13’-1” less 5 ½’ + 3/4”) up each pier. Then we positioned the diagonal braces and nailed them in place. Once the diagonals were nailed in the place, the structure will no longer rack and will remain symmetrical. Then we drilled holes for the bolts and bolted the structure together.

Next we stood the two completed stantions on there sides and temporarily braced them (plumb). Following the same processs as above, we attached the remaining cross members, top rails, deck joists, and diagonal braces. (Again, on each side, we used the tape measure and racked the structure for symmetry).

As an afterthought (not shown on the plan), we fastened a 2”x4” diagonally across the bottom of the completed structure. We nailed it into the bottom cross member next to one pier, then across and into the bottom cross member of the opposing pier. This stiffened the structure so that the whole stand itself would not rack. * add a 2”x4”x12’-0” to your shopping list.

We then cut the deck boards and joists to length .

At this point the structure was completed enough (and heavy enough) to be moved out into the woods.

Once out in the woods, we assembled the deck out in the field. We had to cut notches in the decking to fit around the 4×4 posts- 8 notches altogether which we accomplished with a chainsaw. We also fastened the 1”x6” railing top out in the field.

The Move:

We bolted two hand truck tires to the two pier bottoms and rested the top of the stand on the ATV trailer. We were able to cart the stand out into the woods and stand it up with only 4 guys. Next time we plan to use a salvaged 17’ sailboat trailer to get stand #2 out into the woods. Getting the stand through 1.5 miles of ATV trail through the woods was very tough on our backs, the ATV, and pretty much mangled the ATV trailer.

It only took three guys two stand the deer stand up. We started at the top and just walked the structure up- just like they used to do raising barns. We added a ladder, a lawn chair, and a rope to hoist up hunting gear & rifle and the stand was complete. We plan to paint the stand with some deck stain once the pressure treated wood dries out. I was able to pick-up a can of mis-colored stain for very cheap. Oh, yeah, one final consideration- We found four pieces of flat stone in the woods and located one stone under each of the piers. The stones keep the wood raised off the ground preventing the piers from sucking moisture up out of the ground like a straw- rotting the wood.

Check that website out. There is a treasure trove of hunting DIY how-to over there, ranging from deer stands, to deer feeders, to sewing your own camo.

The set of free deer stand plans they have are the most detailed free plans I’ve seen so far on the internet. It’s not the easiest to build, but it does go into a lot of detail with some instructions included with the plans.

Also, if any of you tech-savy guys out there has a suggestion for a better CMS than wordpress to use for the Deer Stand Plans.net website, let me know. I’m trying to find something with more of a community feel with integrated forums and stuff.

Here are the stands we use at our lease out in Texas. It was designed modularly, so that the main panels could be assembled beforehand and fit in the bed of a pickup.

Total cost for materials is about $140. Total time to assemble the stand is about 2-3 hours. It’s common for similar stands to sell completed for $500+. This stand has the convenience of being able to be built in a confined space like a garage. It can easily be transported in the bed of a pickup, and can be assembled on-site in about 15 minutes with just a power drill, some screws, and a ladder.

The plans are in an easy-to-read .pdf format which is available for immediate download to read on your computer or print them out and take them with you. You’ll get a full materials list, detailed schematics, and step-by-step instructions with pictures to help you along the way.

Here is an example of what the plans look like.

And here is a shot of what the finished deer stand looks like (note: This stand doesn’t have a roof or paint yet. We threw this one up in our garage just to take the pictures. Updated pictures of finished stands will be coming soon.)

Each step along the way is documented with detailed instructions and pictures, as seen below.

Along with the plans, you will get my personal cell phone number if you happen to have any questions along the way.

You’ll also get free updates to the plans. Future updates include folding plexi-glass windows, carpetting, a table along the window for a sandbag to rest your gun on, sloped roof, and more.

And of course, you’ll get a full year – 360 day – money back guarantee. This way you’ll have plenty of time to build the stand and spend an entire season trying it out. If you don’t like it, just send me an e-mail saying you’d like a refund and you’ll get it, no questions asked. You won’t even be out shipping and handling since the plans are entirely downloadable.

I’d like to give these plans away for free, but considerable time and effort went into making these plans as user-friendly as possible. We have already made all the trial and error mistakes for you. You’ll save so much time and money with these plans that they are well worth it the $8.97 price tag.

Order through the secure link below using PayPal (Accepts almost all major credit cards) by clicking the button below. You will instantly be able to download the plans so you can start right away. (note: You don’t need a Paypal account to purchase.

Just wanted to give everyone an update, I’m working on some new deer stand plans at the moment. We should have the blind built this weekend, and I’ll try to compile everything into an easy to read ebook as a simple step-by-step guide complete with pictures every step of the way.

The idea behind this deer blind is that it can be built modularly so all the pieces will lay down flat in the bed of a truck and can be transported and screwed together on-site. So far things are looking pretty good. I was a little bit worried about the weight of the door (we are using a full 5′ high 3′ wide door) putting too much stress on the hinges, but with some 2×2 bracing, it holds fine without any sagging.

This is definitely going to be hunting in style.

This is a review of the deer stand plans offered by Chris Rhyne. While ladder-type treestands are among the easiest to design and build, many folks are at a loss when it comes down to the nitty-gritty of designing and building a deer stand. A fellow hunter, Chris Rhyne, offers instructions (with a video) for building a fourteen-foot tall “semi-portable” wooden tree stand. According to the “plans,” expected material costs are around $50-$60.

One thing I’d like to note early on is that these so-called “plans” aren’t really plans at all. What you get is an acetate report folder with a materials list, cut lists & partial assembly instructions, setup instructions, and a very crude schematic drawing that does little to illustrate proper assembly. The included video is of a very low “home video” quality, and is really not complete at all in the area of assembly instructions.

Those of us who can realistically call ourselves “mechanically inclined” will have little trouble following the instructions, although some portions of assembly are not fully explained to my satisfaction. Those hunters who have a real need for plans and detailed instructions due to a lack of mechanical expertise will most likely find this product of little use, as it treats many aspects of assembly as “givens,” when in fact the lacking information should be included to make this offering a complete product, suitable for everyman.

Included at the end of this video is approximately thirty minutes of poorly-shot footage, including some of deer, turkey, and other critters viewed from treestands, and quite a few dead deer in the beds of pickup trucks. I found most of the treestand footage is shaky, boring, and otherwise hard to watch, and in my opinion it adds little or nothing to the value of this product.

The design of this deer stand is sound, in my opinion, and I’d only make minor changes to it if I were to build a similar ladder stand. If you’re looking for a stand to use on public land, you’ll most likely want to go with something lighter (or an abbreviated version of this one), because while this stand is somewhat portable, it’s really too cumbersome to be moving around, and removing at season’s end.

If you’re looking for deer stand plans for a ladder stand to use on private land and you’re at a loss for a design, or if you fall somewhere between the mechanical extremes of “inclined” and “declined,” then this product may be something of value for you. If you’re looking for an easily-portable stand for use on public land, or if construction principles don’t come naturally to you, you’d probably do well to look elsewhere.

Good stuff
- Practical knowledge & advice – Chris dispenses helpful hints throughout the video.
- Reasonable price – $9.99 gets you the plans & video.
- Down-to-earth – Chris is definitely “one of us,” a hunter first and foremost who speaks plainly.
- Sound design – This really is a sound design, with only a few things I’d change to suit myself.
- Can be moved – The stand can in fact be moved, but not without considerable effort. Hence the name, “semi-portable.”

Not-so-Good Stuff
- Lack of real drawings – a real schematic, showing us the fit of the pieces, is necessary — and lacking.
- Poor Quality video – I think if Chris had taken just a little more time, had called this version a practice run, and re-shot it using the experience gained, he’d have a much better product.
- Lack of proper instructions – While there’s enough information between the paperwork & video for a knowledgeable person to get the job done, I feel there should be a bit more detail.

Happy hunting,

- Russ Chastain

All responsibly of use of these tree stand plans and building of this stand, Remain with the person building the tree-stand. These deer stand plans are just a guide, Please use caution when building and using homemade deer stands.

The need arose for me to have multiple stands to hunt in a variety of wind directions and morning, midday, and evening deer activity areas. I have a Loggy Bayou climbing stand and a loc-on, but to buy 3 or more loc-ons was more money than I cared to invest in equipment so I decided to build my own hang on stand. There are a lot of quality stands on the market and the prices have come down but the do it yourselfer in me told me to just build it.

I checked the woodshed for possible building materials I had on hand. I found a nice piece of 2×3 oak to use for the upright to securely anchor all the components of the stand. You can’t beat solid oak for this, because it won’t split like pine tends to over time. Any good construction man knows you need a sound foundation to build from.

I pulled out some random lengths of 1×6 pressure treated boards for the floor, base and seat. Also a 2 foot piece of 2×6 pressure treated I can rip down lengthwise for the runners to fasten the floorboards and angle supports to.

After getting my can of nuts, bolts and washers, and laying out my hardware, I still needed some angle supports, preferably of metal. I looked around the yard and spotted the old jungle gym and monkey bars. Perfect! I immediately pilfered two crossbars. The kids will never miss them. They just got to reach a little farther next time. I have priorities you know.

I had lengths of swing chain that I bought @ an estate auction years ago. These would be good to wrap around the tree to hang the stand. Assembly was quite easy. All I had to buy at the hardware store was four- quarter inch by 2” lag bolts and a heavy screw-hook. I recommend a quarter inch screw-hook to be safe. Anything smaller will bend after repeated use. This is the main stress point on the stand.

After the completion of your project and hanging your stand with the chain, secure the bottom of the upright to the tree with a ratchet strap to prevent the stand from moving when getting in or out, or leaning for a difficult shot

.

Before ever stepping into your stand, for as many times as you will be using it, please thoroughly check for loose nuts and bolts, bent hook, split wood, chain wear, etc. and overall soundness. Most of all always, always, always wear a chest and thigh harness while hunting from any elevated stand.
